Hand painted scenes layered within dimensional, polished  resin with real star sand collected by the artist in Taketomi Island, Japan encased.  

Star sand is the beautiful shell remnants of microscopic organisms called foraminifera.  Each piece varies slightly. About 1" x 1"

Taketomi Island, located in Okinawa, Japan, is a strictly preserved, traditional village renowned for its "encased" or protected,19th-century, Ryukyuan-style atmosphere. The island, which is formed from lifted coral reefs, prohibits modern building, instead featuring red-tiled roof houses, white coral sand streets, and stone walls. It is known for its "star-sand" beaches and, often in a metaphorical sense of being preserved in time, is a top cultural spot.
